How to change HTML
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:43:12 PM »
I have been reading some of the posts here about changing color, logo, etc.  I have gone to my site via http://mysite/skins_site/def/styles/, and then accessed headers.css to change the color of the logs box and then to layout.css to change the color of the body. If I use google chrome, and use the inspect function as was shown in a video I found on here, it will change these things but will not make the change permanent.  If I try to change them using http://mysite/skins_site/def/styles I can not get any thing to change.  So how can I make a change and make it permanent?

The inspector is only a reference tool which aids you in determining and locating which CSS file and what code to change. It can't permanently make changes, if it could that would mean anyone that visits your site could also make permanent changes to your site.

You simply need to edited the CSS file and save it. If things aren't changing try refreshing your browser while viewing the page on your site, also try hitting the F5 key on your keyboard to do a hard refresh.

If nothing is changing, double check to make sure the changes you made to the CSS file were properly saved.

Also be sure to read the online manual on how to manage your site:

Hello and thanks for the reply but I still don't understand.  I go here, http://mysite/skins_site/def/styles, without having to log in as an administrator or coming from an admin panel? Wouldn't anybody be able to change the layouts of sites if you can just type in their site with the above?  I go to the css file and I can't get it to change anything.  I am only trying to change the colors for now to make sure that I don't mess anything up so I highlight them and they won't delete and won't allow me to change to a different color.  Im using a Mac air. I have tried this with both safari and Google chrome.  Thoughts?

NO, you can't just view a file on a site via your browser and make changes to it. You have to edit the file on your PC then upload it (via an FTP program) to the site directory folder (skins_site/def/styles/) on your server which will overwrite the existing file.

Again, refer to the online manual regarding managing your Etano site.
http://www.datemill.com/etano/wiki/doku.php?id=managing_your_etano_site

In order to use the Etano script and successfully manage and operate a site is going to require having some basic webmaster knowledge and skills, such as how to edit files and upload (FTP) the files to your site (server).

There are ways to edit site files on your server either through your host cPanel or an FTP editor, but we won't provide any instructions on how to do that because it's bad practice (as noted in the online manual on how to manage your Etano site).

We don't provide any extensive or detailed tutorials or instructions for teaching basic webmaster stuff. There's a lot more involved in being a webmaster and running a site than just having a good CMS script. You can't (and shouldn't) rely on a CMS script to do all the webmaster stuff for you. There's plenty of resources available on the web for learning basic and more advanced webmaster stuff.
