Hi, Sally used to have an animated gif as her avatar on the forum but it disappeared when the forum was integrated with the main site and we no longer had forum profiles. I've been trying to load it as her main picture on Etano because it should then show as her avatar but when I try to upload it to her photos I get the Invalid file uploaded message. Is there somewhere I can change somethng to allow animated gifs to be uploaded please?

Ok, here's the problem with animated GIF's, they aren't a typical image, they're an assemblage of multiple images that run in series much like an image slideshow. Since the profile photos being uploaded in Etano are being re-sized into 3 different versions, the PHP GD library would have be able to re-size all the images contained in the GIF and recompile them again, but PHP does not have any functions that re-sizes animated GIF images and keeps the animation intact, unless there's some recent new function that's been developed that I'm not aware of.

I've heard it's possible with the imagemagic plugin if you have it installed on your server and configured for handling animated GIF's, but I can't confirm it or tell you how good it works. Another possibility is using just HTML to resize the animated GIF's, but either way you'll have to contact Dan and see if he can somehow implement it for you because I don't think it's as simple as just allowing animated GIF's to be uploaded, it's the PHP and GD library being able to process the animated GIF's is where the problem lies.

Hmmm - will forget that idea then Maverick and go to Plan B. At least I now know it wasn't just 'cos I was missing something obvious - thanks for explaining it. Smiley
