Help - script stuck on a reef after reinstall now

« on: June 15, 2008, 10:10:10 PM »

I redownloaded the Etano zip on June 11, deleted the addon domain in my cpanel account that I had it on before, then reuploaded and reinstalled.  Instead of deleting the mysql database,  I had truncated the user profiles table using phpmyadmin, but there appeared to be a slight bug with the admin after the reinstall.  So...

I then deleted the domain again as well as the database, and started over (I did also delete the domain's folder in File Manager both times).  After reuploading and reinstalling Etano again, unfortunately it is now partially d.o.a. Sad  I was definitely liking the script in starting to get to know it a bit, despite not <hint> having any more skins yet </hint> grin, and I must admit to being puzzled about why this would be happening now.

Here's what's happening:

1.  When I sign up as a test user, the email doesn't come, and it doesn't come for anything else like lost password recovery, too
2.  I set up the cron job (*/5****), but it sent me this message:  ": Sorry, a critical error has occured. If you are the site administrator please check out the error log to see the actual error."
3.  The error log in the Etano admin panel keeps getting two errors every hour at 55 min. after the hour:

"mysql_result(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource
<br /><pre>Array
(

  • => Array
       (
           [function] => general_error
           [args] => Array" ...more

"Undefined variable: res
<br /><pre>Array
(

  • => Array
       (
           [file] => /home/[PrivateName]/public_html/[DomainFolderName]/tools/cron/jobs/60/1clean_errors.php
           [line] => 11" ...more

Interesting - I just noticed in the admin that these errors now fill only one page going back to June 15, but there were pages and pages before.  I guess they get deleted after a while?

My previous install was from a May 24 download which is the same size as the June 11 one (8,242 KB).  That one was sending user emails prior to installing the June 11 copy, although at first it had looked as if it wasn't going to.  It also looked as if the second one wasn't going to show my added profile field, too, but it did.

Should I just try another domain perhaps?  That's ok for this test domain, but it would not be good if this happened for a "real" domain intended for going live.

There's probably a really simple answer...Could it be having deleted and recreated the addon domain so many times (probably up to four times total)?

1. I doubt that the installer would work correctly if it finds that the database is not already empty. Also, even if the file size is the same, there could be differences in database data or even within the files.
2. The fact that you reinstalled the script a few times is not relevant. You could do it countless times. As long as there are no leftovers from previous installations this should be ok.
3. The "Undefined variable: res" error and another one right after/before this one (which if you look at details points to the same script) is annoying but harmless. I think it is in the bug tracker and it is marked as solved in 1.13. This has nothing to do with the site not functioning or cron job errors. The script is supposed to clean up the error log if it becomes too large within a short period of time and unfortunately it errors out itself.

4. The cpanel servers won't let you send emails if the "from" email address is not set or if it is set to an email address with a domain that is not from your server or even if it is not from an existing email address. Check your admin panel - features and options - contact email.
5. Other emails that are sent by the cron job might not leave the server if your cron job is not functioning or has errors as you mentioned. You can easily see this by checking the email_queue table in the database. If it's not empty or it has too old messages then that's a problem.

6. The errors in the error log are deleted after a few days.

I think I covered every question you had in your lengthy description. If not, ask again Smiley

Thanks, Dan.  I just deleted and reset the cron, and added a contact email to the admin.  Then I signed up as a new member and tested password recovery.  Now the script is sailing.  Also only two of those log entries are showing up, much less than before.  I guess I was a little thrown because with the previous download the emails were coming after an intial waiting period for the very first one, and without a return address showing, too; they were showing only the site title in the return field - I had sort of liked that idea.  But now this is great and the mail comes about as soon as I can click for it (made one of those "no reply" type returns).  I figured there was no reason to abandon ship just yet.
