Question about SMF bridge install
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:18:02 PM »
I've decided to include the SMF forum after my members sparked great interest in having a forum. I've successfully installed SMF. Now I'm installing the SMF bridge and am hung up on one part.

It asks for the Admin username and the SMF database.
When I insert the admin name that I created when installing SMF I get an error message that says that the username I entered as admin could not be found.

Do I have to create another admin ID in SMF?

Did you try following the steps provided in the Etano documentation?

Yes, I keep reading them over and over again, even before I did the installation. I'm stuck at this part "Go to your admin panel - Package Manager and click on install next to SMF Bridge integration addon and follow the steps in the installer."

I was very careful to be sure that only one MySQL username is accessing both the Etano and SMF databases.

The first step isn't allowing me to use the admin username that I used when I installed smf. I keep getting an error message. Outside of the admin control panel at /3rdparty/smf, I can log into smf without any problems.

Did you read this note in the instructions ....

Note 2: As admin your will be asked to relogin when going from Etano admin area to SMF admin area. This is a security double-check imposed by SMF and it can be disabled from SMF admin area.

Yes. I did read that. Is this sentence suggesting that I disable this feature in SMF in order to go through with the bridge installation?

Did you upload the SMF Bridge zip file to the /tmp/packages folder on your sever? Also make sure you don't unzip it or it won't install.

Yes and then I went into the admin control panel, the package manager and clicked on install.

I'm assuming when you click "install" nothing is happening?

If you've installed quite few mods maybe try cleaning up the tmp/packages/ folder to prevent the slow down of the Package Manager. You can remove all files and folders from tmp/packages except .htaccess and index.html , and of course leave the SMF bridge zip file so it can be installed.

I think you might have missed some words that I wrote. I said that I clicked on the Install, it brings me to a page that asks for my admin username and my smf database. This is the page I reach: http://mysite.com/admin/package_install.php?f=smf_bridge-1.00.zip

isn't the admin username, the same admin name that I created in SMF?

When I insert the admin username that I made for SMF and then insert my smf database name, an error in red appears at the top of the page saying: The username you entered as admin could not be found. Please enter another username

Are you sure it's not asking for the username to the SMF database you created, which needs to be the same username to access your Etano database. Also maybe try using your Etano Admin username.

I'm just kind of guessing here as I've never installed the SMF forums.

hmmm I've tried these ideas. Maybe it's a closely guarded secret that only Dan knows.

I hadn't written in here in a while. I just wanted to provide an update to my SMF bridge issue. It turned out that I had installed SMF 2.0 and the bridge was for 1.0. This created a conflict and therefore errors emerged. I hired Dan to do a new installation of SMF and then he created a new bridge version 2.0 for SMF 2.0.

Tom,  I have my bridge working well for 18 months plus (Dan installed it).  I have version 2 of SMF (BTW best forum script out there IMHO).

There is only little issue (which does not affect how it works, at least for now).  In the database, when a new person signs up on my site, over in the SMF database, FOUR entries/IDs get added (as opposed to only one).  Thus one's SMF DB gets filled up very quickly with redundant IDs/users.

If you get a chance, look and see if this also happens in your SMF database.

strawberries, thanks for the heads up. I'll have a look when I get a chance.

By the way, do your forum access levels work from the admin control panel?

Strawberries90 - I checked my SMF database and there are no additional ID entries as you described. There is one ID entry per user.
