dedicated server question
« on: January 22, 2012, 03:01:28 AM »
I just realized by talking to my hosting provider that a shared $10 per month plan is not enough for a professional website. HAHA. So I need to get a dedicated server, especially if doing multimedia. Which of these plans do you think I would need if I was doing a large site with no video? and which would I need for a  site which would include a video chat? please. thanks.

here are the plans

the cheap price is great, but looks like the resources might be insufficient.

EDIT: the shared $10 plan is fine for my small php websites. but not for multimedia.

I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself. You don't need a dedicated server when just starting out, as your site and traffic grows you can upgrade as needed. It could take at least a year of promoting your site before seeing any real substantial traffic and member base, by jumping straight into an expensive dedicated server you'd just be wasting a bunch of money until your site begins to really take off.

You need to spend a little more time reading and studying the cometchat site that I sent you to, their Platinum version includes a plugin for audio and video chat which uses peer-to-peer technology that utilizes the Adobe Stratus service which is absolutely free. No server bandwidth is used and no additional monthly costs are involved. You can start out with the Premium plan and later upgrade to the Platinum version by just paying the difference.

ok. I am not worthy. lol. Thank you! Your advice is very important. This is great. Thank God you know what you are doing.  Does that Premium cometchat service with "guaranteed installation"  mean that they install the cometchat into etano for you? Because I would not know how to integrate it myself. Thanks for saving me a lot of money and headache. Good thing I ended up googling and finding etano, and then you and this forum.

my host said that you need a dedicated server to do an audio video multimedia website. What kind of hosting would I need ? I tried to use Dolphin install because I think it had audio and video and it would not let me run ffmpeg.exe. then my host told me to get a dedicated server. But I guess they were wrong based on what you just said. I also read bad things about dolphin date app.

EDIT: just read part of the link alt popup that cometchat works on shared servers. WOW.

Yes, "guaranteed installation" means installing and integrating into your Etano site. If you mouseover over the "guaranteed installation" in the premium section it tells you this, also be sure to read all their FAQ's.

Multimedia is usually content that's recorded, stored and played , such as if you want to allow users to upload and stream MP3 audio files and/or Videos like YouTube then you'll need a special dedicated server for streaming, which will often require including ffmpeg. The same goes if you wanted to stream audio and video chat directly from your server, this would require setting up a special dedicated streaming server, not just a standard dedicated server, which would be pretty expensive.

That's why it's better to go with something like the audio and video chat offered by cometchat because it eliminates the need for having an expensive streaming server setup and configured for you. All you have to do is upgrade your hosting plan as needed to handle all the visitors and members as your site grows. Once you get over a hundred thousand members you will likely then need a full fledged dedicated server.

Great thanks very much for helping me. I guess I don't have any more questions. I can't think of any anyway. Just have to come up with the $249 I think it was for cometchat premium. That is really cool about the no server load audio video chat. WOW. that is amazing. I think I have an idea of how they did that when it mentions "peer to peer". That must mean that they put the burden on each machine that is chatting with video somehow, maybe I am wrong. Anyway, it's cool, especially for someone with major limited income like myself. lol.

I have my site on a shared hosting server and it's a good investment for starting out. I found the hosting service after spending about a month researching. I was writing to a lot of web hosting service providers and asking each of them if they support Etano's system requirements and going with the best service at the best price. I also found that they have an excellent team that responds promptly to any issue that came up when I was starting out. Of course, when your site becomes successful you can later upgrade to a dedicated server. In fact, I was talking to Marc Lesnick who runs the Internet Dating Conferences and he said that dedicated servers are what you want when it comes to upgrades because someone can look at what you're doing from the back end when you have a shared server. I really don't feel concerned right now. Although he did say that he's heard that dedicated server pricing has come down to around $60 per month. He's presently working on a list of hosting service providers to make it easier for everyone in the industry to choose a good service.

wow you really are involved in this. Knowing that guy. I hope you get rich! You deserve it. I have come to the idea that it is better to make a lot of small successful sites bringing small incomes each that are near the top of the relating search for them, then to try to make some massive site that will be at the bottom of the search engines. LOL. I wish I had money right now, but being in college full time I am broke. I can't wait till I get my semi refund of excess school loans past the summer, then I will buy the platinum cometchat, my domain name, and still not sure how I will market my site other than google ads. They are expensive, if I can't come up with a cheap way to get people to my site, in addition to google searches, I probably won't do anything.

Thanks. we all deserve to get rich some day, including you. I encourage you to not back out if you have a great idea. Someday, you too could come to the Internet Dating Conferences and give a presentation about your company's success. They always welcome startups to give presentations. As far as advertising with no budget, do a search for free ad sites. One of which is http://www.backpage.com. There are others out there that might bring more traffic, but it's going to be a lot of hard work and concentration. Writing up a marketing plan will help out a lot and keep you on track. Of course eventually, when you have a good supply of money or a venture capitalist, go advertise on the sites that have all the traffic. Speaking of traffic, find super affiliates who can drop your ads or banners onto high traffic sites to bring in your customers. getting an affiliate app will help greatly. Super affiliates can be found through affiliate networks. They also attend the conferences.

You can use a shared hosting plan. I offer several that would work for your site, I also run etano on an account on my own server so I know that it works without flaws and I know how much space it requires. If you are interested contact me and I can give you more details. I've been working on etano hosting as part of my services and knowing etano inside and out I am one of the few web hosting providers that does it well. Not that I'm the only one, but I've been using it for several years and I believe I am among the best.
